CAUTION, DANGER- This is an exhibition addressing ideas related to immigration, identity, and cultural relation that are closely intertwined with the association between construction and the Chinese character "Fu."
The Chinese character 福(fú) means "blessing" or "good fortune" in English. It is a commonly used character in Chinese culture, especially during the Chinese New Year or other festive occasions. It is often used to symbolize luck and prosperity and is usually displayed on buildings and doors during Chinese New Year celebrations. Traffic cones function like barriers that block the immigration's local culture from getting into this new land, their voice has been taken away, and some people even hide their culture in unknown corners to better integrate into immigrant life. This exhibition emphasizes how culture has shifted so that locals feel as though they can no longer build a decent living, without hiding their native culture, like the Fu character, which hardly shows out again in front of the Chinse family's house during the Lunar New Year. This group of works uses the traffic cone and Fu characters to explain the complex emotion of identity and security loss.
